COMPANY COMMUNITY INITIATIVE
The following is a working document for The Community of Tomorrow prepared by The Higgens Company.
This blueprint can easily turn into a reality with the help of a community. The statements made below are simply basic ideas and may not be feasible at the time of this writing. Input from the community is appreciated. Any feedback can be directed to contact@higgensonline.com with the subject "Community of Tomorrow Feedback".
Goals:
• Lower Community Health Care Costs
• Encourage Voluntary Healthy Lifestyles
• Prepare Children for the Future through Education
• Create a Strategy for Individuals to Exit Homelessness and Addiction
Beyond Restaurants
A restaurant will be created to serve healthy dishes that are not loaded with sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol. Every item created will be accompanied with a recipe for families to fix at their home on their terms - including the exact ingredients used and nutritional value. The restaurant will be a testing ground for ground-breaking food items and will be the benchmark for the nation. Since the food you order at the restaurant can be made at home, more attention will be given to the atmosphere to create an environment suitable for families to gather and eat, along with more private dining for dates and couples. The restaurant will also be home to stand-up comedians on select nights and other stage shows.
Giving Back
10% of all proceeds will go to the Hand Up program
Funding
The restaurant is a self-sustaining, for-profit venture.
Beyond A Hand Out - The Hand Up Program
A shelter will provide great opportunities for those facing tough times, addictions, abuse, or other stumbling blocks. Certified counselors and doctors will help individuals in their individual cases. A ministry aspect will also be presented, as individuals will be introduced to Jesus Christ and the Bible. It should be noted that any religion or doctrine is not mandated on a person, but an open dialogue is encouraged so the person can come to their own conclusion about what is truth after being presented the Gospel. The Higgens Company recognizes that a person cannot be mandated to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ just as a person cannot be mandated to love another individual - as that love would not be genuine and could lead to a legalistic relationship in both cases.
As individuals voluntarily seek our program, we will provide work through the connections of The Higgens Company, matching their abilities with the appropriate job openings.
Funding
The Hand Up Program will be funded by proceeds from the restaurant and community partners.
Beyond Apartments
The Higgens Company is not looking to regulate private housing or run a residential neighborhood, but we believe creating an apartment complex that can be enjoyed by all is a great first step. Please keep in mind individuals will be well aware of the following before signing up to live in an apartment. This is not a blueprint for all apartments nationwide.
• Smoke-Free Environment
The apartment of tomorrow will be a smoke-free environment. Smoking will be restricted on the property and inside dwellings. The Higgens Company hopes that this will allow the community to save money on medical bills due to the effects of first- and second-hand smoke, and possibly used to obtain lower insurance rates. If a person decides to smoke on the property, it will either result in (a) $500 fine or (b) agreement to attend a course on overcoming tobacco addition in place of a fine. Classes would be provided by our Hand Up Program. We would rather individuals go through the program.
Beyond Education
Education is important in any society. There are many ideas on what should be taught in schools and what should be left to the parents. The Higgens Company is dedicated to finding an environment ideal for students, teachers, and parents.
Funding
Any good education system needs great funding, which is why the education component is the last in the vision of The Higgens Company. All the other divisions of The Higgens Company will fund a elementary, middle, and high school.
Led by Teachers
The school will be led by teachers. School administrators will rotate once every two years among teachers actually working in the school system. This will ensure each high level administrator has first-hand knowledge of what is going on in the school system.
Doing Right by Teachers
Teachers have unions. In some school systems this may work, but not the school system of tomorrow. Union dues should stay in the pocket of teachers. School systems go to war against teachers far too often due to budget constraints. We hope this new education model will ensure teachers get adequate pay for their efforts.
Teachers will not be penalized for poor performance of students due to the lack of interest of students. Students will be matched with teachers that teach the way the student learns - whether it be visually, audibally, or a mixture of both.
Doing Right by Students
Students should have access to quality, real food. During lunch, students will be presented with real food that exceeds any health standards, and actually tastes good, prepared by the Higgens Company’s food division. When students reach high school, they will take trips to the local grocery store, learn how to read nutrition labels, and prepare food so that when they reach college, they will have the skills to know how to cook healthy food to combat many of the preventable diseases in America due to the amount of cholesterol, sodium, and calories presented when many choose to eat out. With students prepared to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle, we should see lower health care costs.
Students will be taught reading, writing, and social skills as well as the freedom to express creativity through art, video, science, and music.
Beyond Fundraising
The Higgens Company will be testing the limits of where education and society meet. In high school, students will be encouraged to write and create works that can be distributed through the channels of The Higgens Company in order to help fund their education - and a chance for students to make money to help fund college. Students will not be asked to go door-to-door to sell cookies, candy bars, or sausages. Instead, one student may decide to write a short story. A classroom may decide to all contribute to a collection of poems. These works will be sold through the Higgens Company’s publishing channels. The Higgens Company will simply be given a limited license for four years to market the product, after which any creation will be the sole property of the creators. All profits would go directly back to education - whether that is designated to college funds or the school system for teacher's pay - not to The Higgens Company.
